Possum Yarn: An Eco-Friendly Choice for Your Knitting!

Possum Yarn Benefits

Possum yarn is a luxurious natural fibre that is lovely to knit with - we New Zealanders prize our Possum yarn and consider it a great eco-friendly choice for crafting.

Possum fibre has a hollow fibre, similar to Alpaca fibre. Each hair has a hollow core, trapping heat and providing insulation for the wearer. Because of the hollow fibres, Possum garments are light, warm, easy to wear and easy to layer.

Another remarkable benefit of Possum yarn is that it is low pilling. Compared to many other natural fibres, possum yarn resists the formation of 'yarn balls' on the surface of garments. This ensures a longer-lasting, smooth appearance, even with regular wear.  We have many samples of Possum knitting in our shop and have never had to de-pill them. Come in and check them out!

Possum fibre blends beautifully with other natural fibres creating a lovely yarn to knit with and a beautiful finished product. Because Possum fibre is very short, it is usually blended with long fibres; the longer and stronger the other fibres are, the more possum can be added to the mix.

We carry various Possum blend yarns with 15% to 40% Possum fibre.  Our 40% blend, Zealana Air Lace, is mixed with Silk and Cashmere, both long and strong fibres. Adding silk to the blend creates a subtle sheen, extra strength, and a draping quality ideal for delicate yet hard-wearing scarves, shawls, and sweaters.

In New Zealand, many Possum-blend yarns include our world famous New Zealand Merino. Merino adds durability and strength to the mix while Possum fibre enhances the warmth and softness of the yarn. Because of its warmth, Possum yarn is a favourite for winter accessories and sweaters. In addition, Possum fibre's breathability ensures comfort for winter layering.

Possum yarn comes in a natural, undyed beigy-ecru colour but also takes dyes well, with rich colours resulting. In several of the Possum-blends we carry, the other fibres are dyed but the Possum is left its natural colour.  When spun, the undyed Possum gives the yarn a soft, earthy vibe and a halo of fibres that 'bloom' as you knit or crochet.

Possum Fibre for Spinners

The best Possum fibre is harvested in the dead of winter here in New Zealand, when the fur is the thickest.  Occasionally we are able to source Possum fibre for spinning, so ask if we have any in stock if you come by!  If you choose to hand spin with Possum fibre, we recommend using no more then 20% Possum in your final mix and using very long fibres for the remainder.   A bag of Possum fibre makes a great souvenir or gift from New Zealand!
