Australian Possums in New Zealand

The Australian brushtail possum was introduced to New Zealand in the 19th century and, without natural predators, has since become widespread throughout the country. While considered a pest due to the damage they cause to native forests and wildlife, their soft, dense fur has found a valuable new purpose in the textile industry. Possum fur is incredibly warm, lightweight, and silky, qualities that make it ideal for blending with fine New Zealand fibres like merino and silk. By using possum fibre in yarn, New Zealand producers not only create luxurious and sustainable products but also help reduce the environmental impact of this invasive species.

Benefits of Possum Blend Wool for Knitting

Possum blend yarns are loved by knitters for their remarkable warmth and softness. The fibres are hollow, meaning they trap air efficiently to provide exceptional insulation without added weight. Garments made from possum blends are as warm as cashmere but much lighter to wear. When blended with merino wool, the result is a yarn that’s soft, smooth, and beautifully balanced: merino adds elasticity and strength, while possum fibres bring a velvety halo and superior warmth. The yarn has a gentle drape and luxurious feel, perfect for scarves, sweaters, hats, and other cosy knits.

Beyond comfort, possum blends are also practical and sustainable. The fibres resist pilling and have natural moisture-wicking and odour-resistant properties, keeping garments fresh and easy to wear. Because possum fur doesn’t absorb dye as strongly as wool, blended yarns often feature a soft, heathered look with rich depth of colour. Choosing possum-blend yarn supports local fibre industries and helps protect New Zealand’s native ecosystems—a rare combination of luxury, warmth, and environmental responsibility.
